It is always nurture, never nature, that causes children to grow up with a discriminatory mindset toward others. In their formative years, they are easily influenced to view others as different or “less than.”
It’s imperative to be vigilant in how you teach children to treat others. In particular, as it relates to any differences they perceive between their self and the other person.
Conditioning children to display discriminatory behavior is sometimes a blatant attempt to persuade a child toward one side. However, everyone is susceptible to teaching their children more nuanced discrimination without realizing it. This is known as Unconscious Bias. Study this phenomenon and work hard to avoid it when rearing children.
