October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month (DVAM), a time to highlight the ongoing issue of domestic violence and the critical support needed for victims. It’s an opportunity to raise awareness, educate, and stand in solidarity with those affected by abuse—whether physical, emotional, financial, or psychological.

Domestic violence affects individuals across all demographics, and DVAM is a chance to advocate for prevention, survivor empowerment, and justice. Numerous organizations work tirelessly to support survivors and raise awareness:

1. The Commission on Domestic & Sexual Violence

Led by the American Bar Association, this commission improves legal support for survivors by ensuring attorneys and advocates are trained to assist victims effectively.

2. Asian & Pacific Islander Institute on Domestic Violence

This group provides culturally specific resources for Asian and Pacific Islander survivors facing unique challenges.

3. Battered Women’s Justice Project (BWJP)

BWJP offers technical assistance and legal training to professionals working with survivors, promoting justice and safety.

4. The Center for Survivor Agency and Justice

Focused on economic justice, this organization helps survivors gain financial independence, combating the financial control often used by abusers.

5. Futures Without Violence

For over 30 years, this group has been a leader in preventing domestic violence and advocating for survivors through policy and education.

6. National Center on Domestic and Sexual Violence

Providing resources and training nationwide, this center helps improve responses to domestic and sexual violence.

7. National Clearinghouse for the Defense of Battered Women

This organization offers legal support to survivors involved in criminal cases related to their victimization.

8. National Council on Child Abuse and Family Violence

This group focuses on preventing child abuse and family violence, offering resources to protect families and children.

9. U.S. Department of Justice, Violence Against Women Office

This office administers the Violence Against Women Act, ensuring federal resources support survivor services and prevention efforts.
